Inclusivity: The 1966 Master Plan did not articulate a commitment to diversity—though Harris Wofford, the first president, imagined a “School of the World.” The 1968 “Statement of First Program” prioritized diversity and the college recruited students from around the globe and from a broad section of U.S. society. About twenty to twenty-five percent of the student body were students of color—a remarkable percentage for the 1960s. Many white students came from working-class backgrounds and were the first in their families to attend college. But student unrest focused, in part, on the student body’s composition. Ultimately the second president, John Maguire, led a planning committee that committed to a student body whose composition would include a majority African-American and Latino student population. Returning students, including many women who attended college after raising their families, made for an unusual mix of college students.
